Funding TO UNIVERSITIES by the Siemens Foundation
Introduction
Founded in 2008 by the German engineering group, the international Siemens Stiftung (foundation) is an independent charitable organization. The foundation is headquartered in Germany and has an endowment of €390 million. There are a further six Siemens foundations in Argentina, Brazil, Columbia, Denmark, France, and the US whose activities align with the objectives established by the Siemens Stiftung.
Its funding focuses on three areas:
Culture
Education
International Development
The Siemens family of foundations is a significant funder of universities in Africa, Asia and, notably, Latin America. As is common with many European foundations, it does not publish funding details but it does reveal that its current programmes support 23 universities in 9 countries. What makes Siemens unusual is its emphasis on funding programmes in Latin American higher education; it supports 12 universities in 5 countries including Bolivia and Peru. Universities supported by Siemens Stiftung include:
University of Lagos, Nigeria
University of the Western Cape, South Africa
Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, Germany
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, München, Germany
